Derek Boyd sentenced to life for murder of father-of-four in north Dublin

Thirty‑one‑year‑old Derek Boyd was convicted of murder after fatally stabbing Mark Carroll, a father of four, in the chest at Boyd’s home in north Dublin. A Central Criminal Court jury found him guilty after nearly nine hours of trial, unanimously rejecting his self‑defence claim. Boyd was sentenced to life imprisonment and was told that his earlier manslaughter conviction for killing his sister would be referred back to the Circuit Court.

The victim’s family described Boyd as a “monster” and delivered an emotional impact statement, saying the killing was a “vicious and unnecessary act of violence”. Boyd had fled the jurisdiction on a ferry from Belfast to Scotland shortly after the murder and had previously escaped custody after the 2022 killing of his sister. He claimed the attack was driven by fear for his own life, but the court rejected that argument.
