Derek Carr joins UCLA coaching staff as special adviser

Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr has joined the UCLA football program as a special adviser to head coach Bob Chesney. Carr, a four-time Pro Bowler who played 11 seasons with the Raiders and Saints, will serve in a volunteer role to assist with offensive game-planning and the development of the Bruins’ quarterbacks.

Carr’s transition to coaching follows his retirement from the NFL in May 2025, a decision driven by a significant shoulder injury involving degenerative rotator cuff damage and a labrum tear. Despite reports of interest from several NFL teams regarding a potential comeback, Carr has committed to his new role in Southern California.

The move reunites Carr with UCLA general manager Darrick Yray, with whom he previously worked at Fresno State. Carr is expected to work closely with presumptive starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava as the Bruins begin their season.
