Derek Tran introduces hazardous materials transparency bill

Representative Derek Tran has introduced House Resolution 10108, known as the “Hazardous Materials Transparency Act,” in response to a major chemical incident at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California. The incident, which occurred over Memorial Day Weekend, involved an overheating tank that led to the evacuation of 50,000 residents and the closure of 5,000 small businesses.

The proposed federal legislation seeks to increase accountability and transparency for industrial facilities handling hazardous materials. Key provisions include mandates for facilities to regularly notify local communities regarding safety measures, establish coordination plans with first responders, and appoint community liaisons to provide timely information during emergencies.
