Derichebourg OI strike ends, waste collection to resume in Réunion
On 5 August 2026 the management of Derichebourg Océan Indien (Derichebourg OI) reached an agreement with employee representatives, ending a strike that had begun on 13 July and disrupted waste‑collection services in the southern Réunion communes of Saint‑Pierre and Petite‑Île. The Civis public waste authority, led by President David Lorion, welcomed the deal and called for an immediate return to normal collection schedules, stressing the need to clear the backlog of uncollected waste that had accumulated during the dispute.
Earlier in the week Lorion had written to Derichebourg OI demanding a rapid restart of social dialogue and warning that, if negotiations stalled, the prefect could consider requisitioning the company to maintain essential services. The strike had prompted health‑sanitation concerns, especially ahead of the school term, and the agreement includes a catch‑up plan and additional resources to restore regular service for residents.
