Derio forest fire reactivates near Loiu Airport

A forest fire in Derio, located near the Loiu Airport in Bizkaia, has caused significant concern due to its proximity to the aviation infrastructure. The fire, which originated in a forested area on Monday evening, was initially thought to be extinguished in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

However, the flames reactivated around 1:00 PM near Mantuliz, heading toward Lauro. This resurgence required the deployment of additional resources, including a helicopter, to support Bizkaia firefighters in their efforts to achieve definitive control. The fire prompted the preventive evacuation of two nearby farmhouses, though no injuries were reported.

Despite the proximity to the airport, flight operations and terminal activities remained unaffected. Emergency services and forest agents have been monitoring the area closely to manage risks associated with smoke and wind direction.
