Dermatologist Begüm Güneş warns sun spots can signal skin cancer
Dermatology specialist Dr. Begüm Güneş of Biruni University Faculty of Medicine says that increased summer sun exposure raises the risk of skin lesions, burns, premature aging and skin cancer. She stresses that any new, changing, bleeding or rapidly growing spot should be examined by a dermatologist, noting that early detection greatly improves treatment success.
Güneş recommends regular sunscreen use not only at the beach but in everyday life, applying a suitable factor 20‑30 minutes before going outdoors and re‑applying after sweating, swimming or prolonged exposure. She advises staying in shade between 10:00 and 16:00, wearing hats, sunglasses and protective clothing, and emphasizes that childhood sunburns increase future cancer risk. High‑risk groups such as fair‑skinned people, those with a family history of skin cancer or many moles should undergo regular skin checks.
