Dermatologist explains causes and treatments for dark circles

Dermatologist Dr. Susanne Steinkraus explains that dark circles under the eyes are not always caused by a lack of sleep. Instead, they can stem from various factors including pigmentation, visible blood vessels, individual anatomy, or swelling.

There are several dermatological classifications for dark circles. Pigment-related circles often appear brownish due to melanin deposits caused by genetics, UV radiation, or hormonal issues. Vascular circles tend to appear bluish or violet.

While many products like caffeine serums, cooling eye patches, and hyaluronic acid are marketed as solutions, Dr. Steinkraus warns that treatments must be matched to the specific cause, as improper use can irritate the sensitive eye area or worsen the appearance.
