Dermatologist insights on hair loss causes and treatments

Hair loss can be caused by various factors including genetics, age, hormonal changes, stress, and nutritional deficiencies. While losing 50 to 100 hairs per day is considered a normal part of the hair's life cycle, disruptions to this cycle can lead to noticeable thinning.

Dr. Dawn Davis, a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic, notes that androgenetic alopecia is a common hereditary condition. In men, this typically involves a receding hairline, while in women, thinning is often more prominent at the crown. One recognized treatment is minoxidil, which is available in topical solutions or foams and can help maintain existing hair or assist in regenerating up to approximately 10% of lost hair.

For women, specific triggers often include iron deficiencies, protein shortages, thyroid disorders, and significant weight loss. Hormonal shifts, such as those occurring after childbirth or during perimenopause and menopause, also play a significant role in hair density and quality. Early identification of the underlying cause is essential for effective management.
