Dermatologist warns of HPV transmission via sauna surfaces
Dermatologist Wu Jen-chin has issued a health warning regarding the transmission of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) through non-sexual contact. The warning follows a case involving a 65-year-old man who developed genital warts in the perineal and anal areas six months after visiting a sauna.
The individual reportedly sat directly on a sauna chair without using a towel. Dr. Wu explained that HPV can be transmitted through close skin-to-skin or mucosal contact, which includes sitting on contaminated surfaces or sharing towels.
To reduce risk, medical professionals recommend using a personal towel when sitting in public facilities such as saunas or swimming pool changing rooms. Additionally, doctors advise that both men and women should consider receiving the HPV vaccine and seek medical attention immediately if any unusual growths appear in private areas.
