Dermatologist warns of seasonal hair loss in autumn

Dermatology specialist Dr. Alborz Müşfiki from Medical Park TEM Hospital has provided insights into seasonal hair loss, noting that a temporary increase in shedding may occur during late summer and autumn.

Dr. Müşfiki explained that hair follows a natural cycle of growth, transition, and resting/shedding phases. Seasonal changes can influence this cycle, causing more hair strands to enter the shedding phase simultaneously. This type of seasonal loss is typically widespread across the scalp and often subsides within a few weeks to a few months.

While losing approximately 50 to 100 hairs per day is considered within physiological limits, Dr. Müşfiki advised seeking medical attention if there is a noticeable increase compared to an individual's usual shedding, visible thinning, or significant hair accumulation on pillows, combs, or in the shower. Other factors that can disrupt the hair cycle include intense physical or psychological stress, rapid weight loss, malnutrition, severe infections, and high fever, which may lead to a condition known as telogen effluvium.
