Dermatologists advise applying moisturizer before sunscreen

Dermatologists say the correct order in a morning facial routine is to apply moisturizer first and sunscreen as the final step. The logic is that skin‑care products should be layered from lowest to highest density, allowing the sunscreen to form a protective film on the skin surface.

After cleansing, a typical sequence is serum, then moisturizer, a short wait of a few minutes, and finally sunscreen. The sunscreen should not be mixed with other cosmetics or makeup base, as this can reduce its effectiveness. Health authorities such as the World Health Organization recommend reapplying sunscreen every two hours when outdoors, after swimming, or after heavy sweating. While some moisturizers contain SPF, dermatologists note that the amount needed to achieve the labeled protection is much higher than normal usage, so a dedicated sunscreen is still advised. Daily sunscreen use helps prevent photo‑aging and lowers skin‑cancer risk, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
