Dermatologists advise lukewarm showers to prolong tanned skin
Skin experts say the temperature of the water used after swimming influences how long a tan lasts. Warm or hot showers strip natural oils, dry the epidermis and accelerate peeling, shortening the appearance of a suntan. In contrast, lukewarm or slightly cool water is gentler, preserving the skin’s moisture barrier so the tan fades more slowly. Professionals also recommend short showers, patting the skin dry rather than vigorous rubbing, and staying well‑hydrated throughout the day. Daily use of rich moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, aloe vera, shea butter or almond oil helps keep the skin hydrated, further extending the tan’s life.
