Dermatologists advise on skin pigmentation and sun protection
Dermatologists emphasize the importance of skin care and sun protection to manage pigmentation issues such as melasma, solar lentigines, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Dr. Gerardo Fernández Cervantes notes that while sunscreen is a primary preventive tool, pigmentation can also be influenced by hormonal, inflammatory, or genetic factors. He advises monitoring lesions for changes in size, shape, color, or irregular borders, which may require medical consultation. Effective management includes consistent daily photoprotection, gentle cleansing, and hydration.
In Brazil, dermatologist José Roberto Fraga Filho recommends rigorous daily photoprotection, specifically suggesting facial sunscreens with color to protect against both ultraviolet radiation and visible light. He suggests that those with melasma may benefit from antioxidant substances or oral photoprotectors as complements to topical sunscreen. Planning skin treatments, such as peelings or intense pulsed light, before periods of high sun exposure is also advised to avoid inadequate procedures.
