Dermatologists advise on winter skin dryness and care
Cold weather and low indoor humidity reduce the skin’s natural oil production, weakening the protective barrier and leading to dryness, itching, and irritation. Hot, prolonged showers strip natural lipids, further increasing water loss.
Experts recommend limiting baths to once daily, using lukewarm water, and choosing gentle, detergent‑free cleansers. Moisturizers applied to damp skin should contain barrier‑supporting ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol or niacinamide. Vulnerable areas include elbows, knees, hands, feet and the face, especially for older adults, diabetics and individuals with eczema, psoriasis or rosacea.
Avoid abrasive sponges and excessive scrubbing, and consider products formulated for dry or sensitive skin. Maintaining hydration during the winter months can help prevent secondary infections and flare‑ups of existing dermatological conditions.
