Dermatologists debunk myth that daily hair washing causes hair loss
Dermatologists have clarified that daily hair washing does not cause hair loss. While seeing hair in the shower drain can cause concern, experts explain that the hair shed during washing had already detached from the scalp and would have been lost during combing regardless.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, losing between 50 and 100 hairs per day is considered normal. Washing hair simply makes the accumulated daily shedding visible all at once. Furthermore, a 2021 study published in the journal Skin Appendage Disorders suggested that individuals who wash their hair more frequently may actually experience less hair loss.
Spanish dermatology professor José Carlos Moreno noted that shampoo cannot cause permanent hair loss because hair follicles are protected deep beneath the scalp.
