Dermatologists stress proper sunscreen amount and reapplication worldwide

Dermatologists across Spain, the United Kingdom and North Macedonia stress that modern sunscreen products act immediately, provided they are applied correctly. The recommended dose is at least two milligrams per square centimetre of skin – roughly 30 ml (about a full cup) for an adult’s whole body – and this quantity, not the timing, determines effectiveness.

Experts advise using a sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30, preferably SPF 50 or higher, and choosing broad‑spectrum formulas that block both UVB and UVA rays. Reapplication should occur every two hours, and after swimming, sweating, drying with a towel or any prolonged rubbing of clothing. Common errors include applying too little product, skipping re‑application, neglecting areas such as ears, lips, neck and the back of the hands, and using expired or poorly stored creams. Even on cloudy days up to 90 % of UV radiation can reach the skin, so daily protection is recommended. Physical measures – seeking shade, wearing UPF clothing, hats and sunglasses – remain the first line of defence. Following these practices reduces sunburn, premature skin ageing and the long‑term risk of skin cancer.
