Dermatologists provide guidance on effective sunscreen application
Dermatologists emphasize that proper sunscreen use requires more than a single morning application. Experts note that sun protection efficacy decreases over time due to factors such as sweat, oil, friction, and the passage of hours. It is recommended to reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours when outdoors to maintain protection.
Medical professionals warn against the misconception that makeup containing SPF provides sufficient protection on its own. Furthermore, a high SPF rating can degrade significantly; for instance, an SPF 50+ product may lose effectiveness to the level of an SPF 20 after several hours.
When selecting a product, experts advise looking for labels that specify protection against both UVA and UVB rays, as well as blue light and infrared radiation. For effective coverage, a sufficient amount of product—approximately 30 milliliters per application—should be applied uniformly across all exposed areas, including the ears, hands, and neck.
