Dermatologists recommend scalp-focused shampooing to prevent hair dryness
Dermatologists suggest that proper shampoo application technique is essential to prevent hair from becoming dull, brittle, or excessively dry. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), shampoo should be concentrated on the scalp rather than being spread throughout the entire length of the hair.
The scalp is the primary area requiring cleansing because it is where sebum, sweat, dead skin cells, and product residue accumulate. By massaging the product into the scalp with fingertips—avoiding the use of nails—the necessary hygiene is achieved without damaging the more fragile hair strands.
Because the mid-lengths and ends of the hair are naturally more susceptible to dryness, especially in long or textured hair, direct application of shampoo can strip away essential moisture. During the rinsing process, the foam that flows from the scalp down the hair length is sufficient to remove light debris and pollution without the need for mechanical friction, which can damage cuticles and cause split ends.
