Dermatology guidance emphasizes skin barrier repair after summer

Dermatological guidance for post-summer skincare emphasizes prioritizing the restoration of the skin barrier over aggressive treatments like chemical peels or high-strength acids. After exposure to sun, heat, and salt water, skin often experiences dehydration, inflammation, and oxidative stress, making it more sensitive and prone to irritation.

Experts suggest that if standard moisturizers cause stinging or redness, the skin is likely too compromised for intensive procedures. Instead, the focus should be on gentle cleansing and deep hydration. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends using moisturizing products containing ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, mineral oil, petrolatum, and shea butter to combat dryness.

While autumn is a common time to reintroduce retinoids to address photoaging and pigmentation, these should be introduced gradually to avoid further irritation. Additionally, broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher remains essential for autumn skincare routines to protect against ongoing UV damage.
