Dermatophilus congolensis bacteria spreads between humans in Europe

The bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis, typically known in veterinary medicine, appears to be spreading between humans for the first time. While the bacteria has previously jumped from animals to humans, recent cases in Europe suggest human-to-human transmission.

In Sweden, the first case was identified in March, characterized by unusual genital rashes. Following four cases in early June, several more have been diagnosed in Stockholm. Notably, none of these patients reported contact with animals, leading experts to suggest that close physical contact is the most likely transmission route.

Cases have been reported across France, Spain, Germany, and Sweden, primarily among men who have sex with men. In Norway, ten cases have been identified among martial arts practitioners. The infection manifests as small skin spots that eventually scale, typically located on the genitals, groin, or face, and can sometimes form pustules.
