Dermot Desmond targeted by Celtic fans at St Andrews golf tournament

Dermot Desmond, the principal shareholder of Celtic FC, was targeted by protesters during the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews. While participating in the Pro-Am alongside golfer Brooks Koepka, masked demonstrators threw tennis balls onto the 15th green of the Old Course. The tennis balls reportedly featured images of Desmond’s face with a cross through them.

The Celtic Fans Collective, a coalition of supporter groups, claimed responsibility for the disruption. In a statement, the group asserted that Desmond has used his wealth to “hide from supporters and accountability” and stated the protest was intended to send a message that the current leadership arrangement cannot continue. The unrest follows mounting fan frustration regarding the club’s recent performance and transfer activity.

Celtic Football Club issued a statement condemning the “premeditated action” and announced it would no longer recognize the Collective as a representative supporter body. The club also threatened indefinite bans from Celtic Park for individuals or groups involved in the demonstration. Police Scotland confirmed they were aware of the incident and noted there were no reported injuries, though investigations are ongoing.
