Derrick Moore dies after rescuing girl from rip current in Myrtle Beach

Derrick Moore, a 47-year-old father of four from Loganville, Georgia, died after rescuing a young girl from a rip current at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Moore, an elementary school physical education teacher and football coach, entered the Atlantic Ocean on Friday, August 7, to assist the minor who had become caught in the dangerous current.

Reports indicate that Moore successfully brought the girl to safety, but was immediately pulled under by the rip current. Following a search involving the Myrtle Beach Police Department, Fire Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard, Moore’s body was recovered near 11th Avenue South on Saturday, August 8.

The incident occurred near Fourth Avenue South or 10th Avenue South, depending on the reporting agency, after lifeguards had finished their shifts for the day. While the identity and condition of the rescued girl have not been released, a relative of the girl stated that Moore saved both the minor and another individual during the encounter. The cause and manner of death remain pending.
