Derrick Parker, NYPD ‘Hip-Hop Cop’, dies at 65

Derrick Parker, the former NYPD detective known as the department’s ‘Hip-Hop Cop,’ has died at the age of 65. According to his brother, Strickland Parker, he passed away on July 24 at a hospital in East Meadow, New York, following a heart attack.

Parker joined the NYPD in 1982 and held various roles, including beat cop in Midtown Manhattan, undercover narcotics officer in the Bronx, and homicide detective in Brooklyn. In 1996, he joined the department’s cold-case unit. Due to his deep knowledge of the music scene, he became a key figure in investigations involving rappers and record executives.

By 1999, Parker led a rap-focused intelligence operation within the NYPD’s Gang Intelligence Unit. His work, which involved monitoring industry events and briefing officers on potential security concerns regarding artists and their entourages, was often viewed as controversial due to concerns regarding police surveillance of the Hip-Hop community.
