Derry landmark building to undergo £1.4m regeneration

The Department for Communities has announced more than £1.4 million in funding to secure the future of the 19th-century former Danske Bank building in Derry city centre. The loan, provided through the North West Regeneration Fund, enables the Inner City Trust to purchase the landmark structure located in Shipquay Square.

The building, which was constructed between 1860 and 1879, will undergo significant refurbishment to return it to commercial use. The project aims to support the regeneration of the city centre, protect built heritage, and increase footfall for local businesses.

Colum Eastwood, SDLP Foyle MP, welcomed the decision, noting that the funding helps prevent key buildings from lying empty and instead allows them to serve as hubs for the local economy. This investment follows other recent regeneration efforts in the area, including projects involving the Austin’s department store building and the Inner Walled City Public Realm Scheme.
