Derry sectarian violence forces children to flee sports hub
Sectarian violence erupted in Derry on Monday night, marking the second consecutive night of disorder in the city. Masked youths targeted police officers with petrol bombs and masonry near the interface between the nationalist Top of the Hill and the unionist Irish Street areas in the Waterside district.
The unrest, which began around 8 p.m. and subsided by 10 p.m., is believed to be linked to ongoing tensions regarding an Orange Order parade standoff at Drumcree. The violence disrupted the Waterside Shared Village, a cross-community sports hub, where children participating in football training were forced to flee for safety. Local officials reported that elderly residents were also left frightened in their homes.
In addition to the clashes at the sports hub, a Sinn Féin constituency office on Spencer Road was targeted, resulting in smashed windows. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has announced an increased presence across the city to identify those responsible and make arrests. Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney stated that while community tensions remain elevated, the recent disorder is an unacceptable response.
