Des Plaines police shoot and kill 21-year-old man

Des Plaines police shot and killed 21-year-old Ayham Babidi on Wednesday afternoon following a report of a domestic disturbance in the 2000-block of East Touhy Avenue.

According to police reports, officers responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. after reports that a man was acting violently and breaking windows. An officer encountered Babidi in a front yard brandishing an electric hedge trimmer. Police stated that Babidi approached the officer in a threatening manner and refused commands to drop the tool, leading the officer to fire three rounds.

Babidi was transported to a local hospital where he later died. While police identified the weapon as an electric hedge trimmer, family members noted that Babidi had struggled with mental health issues, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
