Desember Jani film to premiere at Tokyo International Film Festival

The Indonesian film ‘Desember Jani’ has released its teaser trailer and is set to have its world premiere in the Asian Future competition at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival. Directed by Ariani Darmawan, the project marks her return to filmmaking after a 15-year hiatus.

The story follows 13-year-old Jani over four days in December as she navigates complex family dynamics involving four women across three generations. The narrative explores the tension between Jani and her single mother, Winnie, following the unexplained departure of Jani’s sister, Julia. As Jani struggles to communicate with her mother, she finds solace in her grandmother, Oma.

Produced by Jakarta-based Palari Films, the screenplay was written by Cyntha Hariadi and inspired by her poetry collection ‘Manifesto Flora’. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in Indonesia starting December 10, 2026.
