Sahara Desert Dust Levels Rise Across Southern Europe
A study published in *Nature* and supported by measurements from over 100 European monitoring stations found that atmospheric dust concentrations have increased throughout the continent, with the greatest rise in southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Analysis of roughly 18,500 daily aerosol samples taken between 2012 and 2021 showed that dust contributed, on average, about 31 % of the WHO‑recommended annual PM10 limit in the south.
Researchers link the trend to ongoing desertification in the Sahara and changes in atmospheric circulation that transport more sand‑laden air northward. The increase poses health risks from fine‑particle exposure and could diminish the efficiency of large‑scale solar installations, as dust settles on panels.
A complementary investigation by the Paul‑Scherrer Institute using AI‑enhanced data corroborated the pattern, reporting that average desert‑dust concentrations in southern Europe now reach 5.3 µg m⁻³—more than double those in central and northern regions—and that total dust loads have risen by roughly half a microgram per cubic metre over the past decade. Long‑term ice‑core records indicate that desert‑dust levels have more than doubled over the last 150 years, underscoring a persistent upward trajectory.
