Desert Southwest faces extreme heat warning and storm risks

An extreme heat warning has been issued for the Desert Southwest, covering portions of southeast California and southwest Arizona. High temperatures are expected to range between 106 and 116 degrees Fahrenheit, with overnight lows remaining high between 84 and 91 degrees.

Due to elevated dew points and high humidity, heat index levels—or “feels like” temperatures—are projected to reach between 110 and 120 degrees. A ridge of high pressure is maintaining these conditions, providing little relief even during nighttime hours.

In addition to the heat, a monsoonal moisture surge is increasing the likelihood of scattered showers and thunderstorms through the end of the week and into early next week. While rainfall amounts may be low in some areas, thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, localized flooding, gusty winds, and blowing dust.
