Deshaun Watson named Cleveland Browns starting quarterback
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken has named Deshaun Watson the team’s starting quarterback for the 2026 season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Watson won the position following a preseason competition against Shedeur Sanders.
The decision comes after a period of significant difficulty for Watson, who has dealt with multiple Achilles tendon injuries and has faced intense criticism from the Cleveland fan base. Following a 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills, Watson expressed frustration with the crowd, describing the boos as “personal” and “disrespectful.” He later attempted to address these comments, stating his emotions had gotten the best of him and acknowledging the fans' frustration regarding the team's direction.
Monken stated that after reviewing the full body of work from the offseason through training camp, he believed Watson provided the best chance to move the ball and score points in the upcoming road game. Despite the decision, questions remain regarding Watson's long-term future and the financial implications of his contract, which includes a significant guarantee if he remains on the roster through March.
