Design Essentials founder discusses brand legacy and Stay Soft Fro origins

Cornell McBride Sr. and his son, Cornell McBride Jr., recently discussed the history and legacy of the hair care brand Design Essentials. During an appearance on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show, McBride Sr. revealed that he co-created the iconic Stay Soft Fro product decades ago alongside Thurman McKenzie.

A former pharmacist, McBride Sr. noted that his entry into the hair care industry was driven by personal motivations, including a childhood dream of building a house for his mother. This early work served as the foundation for the eventual launch of Design Essentials, which provides products for both consumers and professional stylists through major retailers. McBride Jr., who has been involved in the family business since childhood, expressed that continuing his father’s vision is an honor.
