Design physics explains the longevity of vintage Yugoslav refrigerators

Old Yugoslav-era refrigerators, such as the Obodin and Gorenje models, are frequently cited on social media for their extreme longevity, with some users claiming they remain functional after 30 to 50 years.

The durability of these appliances was largely due to their design, which utilized natural convection. By placing the evaporator at the top of the cooling compartment, cold air—which is denser—naturally falls while warmer air rises. This allowed for effective cooling without the need for complex electronics, fans, or air ducts, thereby reducing the number of components prone to failure.

While modern refrigerators have moved the freezer to the bottom to improve ergonomics and eye-level access to fresh food, the traditional top-freezer configuration remains more energy-efficient. According to ENERGY STAR and the U.S. Department of Energy, top-freezer models can consume between 10 and 25 percent less electricity than bottom-freezer models.
