Design strategies for year-round terrace usability

DmasC Arquitectos has proposed seven design strategies to make terraces usable during autumn and winter by adapting to wind, sun patterns, and rain. Key recommendations include identifying air currents, utilizing radiant heat sources, and selecting materials that improve thermal sensation.

To maximize sunlight during winter months, the study suggests using adjustable solar protections, such as louvered pergolas, retractable awnings, or deciduous climbing plants like vines. For maintenance and safety, it is advised to clean drains and gutters to prevent water accumulation and to ensure glass-enclosed terraces are properly ventilated to avoid condensation.

Modifying a building's facade with enclosures typically requires community agreement and local municipal licenses or declarations. Additionally, using technical textiles that resist moisture and employing watertight storage for outdoor cushions can help extend the usability of the space.
