Design students show growing interest in physical media

Design students are showing an increased interest in physical media, according to paper and print expert Hans Jonasson. Jonasson, a former consultant at Antalis, notes that while students are skilled in design, there is a need for better collaboration between designers, printers, and bookbinders to improve knowledge regarding material use and final production capabilities.

Jonasson, who continues to lecture at design schools following his retirement, emphasizes the importance of hands-on experience with 'dummies'—physical prototypes used to test paper, format, and binding before full production. He advocates for stronger communication across the production chain to ensure designers understand the practical possibilities of different materials and binding techniques.
