Design systems evolve to communicate intent to AI

The concept of design systems is evolving to accommodate artificial intelligence through new documentation standards. While traditional files like WordPress’s theme.json define technical implementation, the proposed DESIGN.md format aims to communicate design intent. This allows AI to understand the principles, constraints, and visual language behind a system—such as why specific colors or spacing scales are used—rather than merely inferring them from code or screenshots.

A robust design system functions as a product, requiring a roadmap, ownership, documentation, and versioning. Key components include design principles to guide decision-making and design tokens. These tokens act as a single source of truth, categorized into base tokens (raw values) and semantic tokens (purpose-based values), enabling consistent branding and scalable user interfaces across digital platforms.
