Designer Juan Vidal addresses design theft and industry challenges

During the III Design Congress held at the Elche Bar Association, designer Juan Vidal discussed the difficulties independent creators face when protecting their work from large corporations. Vidal, who received a Career Achievement Award at the event, highlighted the thin line between inspiration and copying.

Vidal shared an instance from 2019 involving heart-shaped earrings he designed, which became popular after being worn by singer Rosalía. Following the visibility gained from the singer, similar accessories appeared on major commercial platforms and brands such as H&M and Amazon Fashion. Vidal noted that while the models were not identical, the timing suggested his original designs were being utilized by larger commercial circuits without the original creator receiving direct benefit.
