Desogestrel contraceptive linked to slight rise in brain tumor risk

A large observational study of more than 92,000 women found that use of a desogestrel‑containing oral contraceptive for longer than five years was associated with a modest increase in the incidence of surgically treated meningeal brain tumours. Among 17,331 long‑term users, one case required surgery, whereas among 67,300 women who used the pill for less than five years only one such case was recorded. The researchers did not establish a direct causal relationship, but the French drug‑safety authority cautioned women on prolonged use to monitor their health and attend regular medical examinations. Other hormonal contraceptives showed an even lower risk.
