Sachsen-Anhalt election: Investigations into postal voting irregularities

Ahead of the state election in Sachsen-Anhalt, several irregularities regarding postal voting have been reported. In Dessau-Roßlau, state security is investigating suspected election fraud involving a 95-year-old resident of the Marthahaus senior residence. A legal representative reported that while staff claimed resident voting documents were being shredded for time reasons, postal voting documents for the woman had already been requested and processed without his knowledge. It remains unclear who requested the documents or filled out the ballots.

In Halle and Magdeburg, administrative errors led to duplicate voting documents being sent to 1,624 eligible voters. In Halle, the city attributed the issue to a technical error by an external service provider that caused documents to be printed and dispatched twice. One affected couple reported receiving as many as six different sets of voting materials.

Local authorities in Dessau-Roßlau have defended the legality of their postal voting procedures, stating that the city election office adheres to statutory requirements and that the specific incident in the senior residence is subject to an ongoing investigation by the public prosecutor's office.
