Pumpkin consumption linked to improved gut health

Recent studies have highlighted the significant health benefits of pumpkin for gut health, specifically regarding its impact on the microbiome. Research published in Food Chemistry indicates that certain polysaccharides found in pumpkin act as prebiotics.

These complex carbohydrates remain largely stable through the stomach and small intestine, eventually reaching the large intestine. Once there, they are fermented by gut bacteria, leading to the production of short-chain fatty acids, such as acetate. This process provides energy to the cells of the intestinal mucosa and helps support the intestinal barrier. Furthermore, the studies observed changes in bacterial composition, including an increase in Lactobacillus and a decrease in Escherichia-Shigella.
