Destination weddings emerge as high‑value growth pillar for Greek tourism

A recent study presented at the Destination Weddings Tourism Forum highlighted the rapidly expanding wedding‑tourism market in Greece. The average budget per wedding exceeds €160,000 (pre‑VAT) and the sector’s annual contribution could reach €2.5 billion. Seventy‑seven percent of weddings are organized for couples from abroad, with the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Israel and the United Arab Emirates identified as the main source markets.

Key demand factors include authentic local experiences (95 % of planners), privacy (92 %) and high‑end gastronomy (84 %). Sustainability is gaining traction, with 34 % of couples seeking eco‑friendly options. The industry’s growth is expected to extend tourists’ stay length and spread activity to more regions, reinforcing its role as a strategic economic driver for Greece.

Greek officials, including Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and Deputy Culture Minister Iasonas Fotilas, underscored the sector’s value for local communities and called for coordinated national strategies, digital promotion, and infrastructure upgrades to consolidate Greece’s position as a premier destination‑wedding venue.
