Destiny 2 shutdown triggers fan parody game and boosts Warframe growth

After Sony's 2022 acquisition of Bungie, the studio announced the end of service for Destiny 2 in June 2026, accompanied by a 17% workforce layoff. In response, a fan (or former employee) released a free browser game called "Pete Carsons: The Final Car," letting players hurl tomatoes at former Bungie CEO Pete Parsons' collection of classic cars as a satirical outlet.

Digital Extremes president Sheldon Carter said that while Destiny 2's player numbers declined, its longtime rival Warframe has experienced "massive growth" over the past two years. The increase has allowed the studio to focus on its upcoming project Soulframe, even as the shutdown left a "dour" mood among staff who had connections with Bungie.
