DeterTech and Gallagher report rising metal theft in UK infrastructure

DeterTech and insurance broker Gallagher have released a joint report, ‘Secured and Insured: A Practical Guide to Deterring Metal Theft’, addressing the rising threat of metal theft against the UK’s critical infrastructure.

The report highlights a 59% year-on-year increase in reported offences targeting solar, onshore wind, and battery storage facilities. High copper prices are cited as a primary driver for organized criminal groups. Metal theft is estimated to cost the UK approximately £480 million annually, impacting sectors including energy, utilities, transport, telecommunications, and construction.

To mitigate these operational and financial risks, the guide recommends that businesses implement professional security risk assessments, enhance perimeter security, audit video monitoring systems, and utilize forensic marking technologies.
