Detroit activists demand removal of Police Chief Todd Bettison
Activists and officials in Detroit are calling for the resignation of Police Chief Todd Bettison following allegations of police misconduct. The protests were sparked by an incident involving activist Jahdante Smith, who claims Detroit police confiscated his cellphone and a month’s worth of data in front of his seven-year-old son.
Smith alleges the seizure was retaliation for social media posts featuring Mayor Mary Sheffield and Marvin Walker, an individual with an alleged criminal history. While Chief Bettison maintains the investigation into Smith is related to a citizen complaint rather than the social media content, the Office of Inspector General is currently investigating the department’s actions.
In addition to calls for the chief’s removal, demonstrators are demanding greater transparency from the Mayor’s office. They are seeking information regarding alleged contracts previously awarded to Marvin Walker and Gyonga Construction, citing concerns over potential ties to Mayor Sheffield.
