Detroit-area nonprofits receive $1.3 million for cultural heritage projects
Sixteen nonprofits in the Detroit area have been awarded $1.3 million through the Kresge Innovative Projects: Detroit Plus (KIP:D+) Cultural Heritage grant initiative. The funding supports projects in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park aimed at preserving local traditions and strengthening community connections.
Project scopes include documenting Black women’s health stories through photography and storytelling, preserving Indigenous cultural traditions, and establishing a multigenerational oral history archive. The archive, to be implemented by Brilliant Detroit, will utilize neighborhood hubs for interviews, creative workshops, and public art activities.
The KIP:D+ program is a partnership between The Kresge Foundation, Co. act, and Michigan Community Resources (MCR). This iteration of the program marks a shift toward a specific focus on cultural heritage following a redesign informed by community feedback and resident advisory groups.
