Detroit junk removal workers intervene in house fire, aiding rescue of elderly woman

On July 21 at about 8 a.m., Dewayne Carr and Nicholas Bryant, employees of Penguin Junk Removal, were driving past a house on Plainview near Eight Mile Road in Detroit when they noticed dense smoke and heard a cry for help. They pulled over, called 911, retrieved a sledgehammer and crowbar, and attempted to break into the locked home. The front door was blocked by the elderly resident herself, so they entered through the back door and saw her daughter fleeing. Detroit Fire Department crews arrived shortly thereafter and rescued the woman, who remains hospitalized with severe burns.

Fire officials emphasized that while the workers’ quick response helped buy critical minutes, entering a burning building is extremely hazardous and should be left to professional firefighters.
