Detroit Lions and Sam LaPorta halt contract extension talks

The Detroit Lions and star tight end Sam LaPorta have halted contract extension negotiations after several weeks of discussions during the early part of the season. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, LaPorta’s camp requested to pause talks to allow the player to focus entirely on his performance on the field after no agreement was reached following a push over a recent weekend.

LaPorta, who is returning from previous back surgery, remains a key contributor for the Lions, playing approximately 90 percent of offensive snaps and maintaining high blocking grades. While negotiations have paused, the Lions have a history of conducting in-season extension talks, and a deal could potentially be revisited during the offseason. If no agreement is reached, LaPorta will become an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

The Lions have recently prioritized retaining young talent from their 2023 draft class, having already secured extensions for running back Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell. A future deal for LaPorta could potentially make him one of the highest-paid tight ends in the NFL.
