Detroit Lions linebacker battle intensifies between Devin White and Malcolm Rodriguez

The Detroit Lions are seeing an unexpected linebacker competition emerge during the preseason. Devin White, a former top-five pick and All-Pro, has moved from being a roster bubble candidate to a serious contender for a starting role.

Initially, Malcolm Rodriguez was positioned to take over the WILL linebacker position following roster changes. However, after White signed with Detroit on August 1 following injuries to other players, he has begun taking first-team snaps. In a recent 17-13 preseason victory over the Washington Commanders, White started and played 23 defensive snaps, while Rodriguez played 19.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell noted that White appears to be moving with speed and intelligence, stating, “He looks like a different guy than what we saw in Vegas last year on tape.” Rick Spielman, Special Assistant to the President/CEO, also commented on the broadcast that White and Rodriguez are engaged in a “great competition.” While Rodriguez has been utilized in various defensive roles, White appears to be settling into the traditional WILL role.
