Detroit Lions lose Avonte Maddox to season-ending foot injury

The Detroit Lions secondary has suffered a significant setback following the news that veteran cornerback Avonte Maddox will miss the remainder of the season. Maddox requires surgery for a foot injury sustained during the team’s Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills.

Head coach Dan Campbell described the loss as a blow to the team, noting that Maddox had been playing a crucial role by filling in at safety due to existing injuries to Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. The injury crisis extends to other defensive backs, including Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Keith Abney II.

In response to the roster depletion, the Lions have signed veteran defensive back Jalen Mills to the practice squad. Mills, 32, brings 11 years of NFL experience with previous stints at the Eagles, Patriots, Giants, Jets, and Texans. Campbell indicated the team is also looking to evaluate other young players and potentially poach safeties from other rosters to bolster depth.
