Detroit Lions may rotate guards for season opener

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has indicated that the team may utilize a rotation at left guard for their 2026 season opener against the New Orleans Saints. Rather than naming a single permanent starter, Campbell plans to have Christian Mahogany and veteran Ben Bartch split first-team repetitions throughout the week.

If a definitive decision is not reached by the end of the week, both players could participate in Sunday's game. While Mahogany has been viewed as the early favorite for the position, his performance has been described as inconsistent. Bartch provides veteran experience, though his availability was limited during training camp due to injuries.

The offensive line is undergoing further adjustments as Cade Mays is placed on injured reserve due to a wrist injury, leading to Juice Scruggs taking over at center. Campbell noted that playing the season opener at Ford Field should provide a beneficial environment for the team's younger players.
