Detroit Lions release veteran safety Jalen Mills
The Detroit Lions have released veteran defensive back Jalen Mills from their practice squad. Mills, a 32-year-old safety, had been elevated to the active roster for three consecutive weeks to assist with depth in the secondary.
The decision comes as the Lions' defensive backfield undergoes changes. Pro Bowl safety Brian Branch has returned to practice following a period on the physically unable to perform list. Additionally, rookie Keith Abney has begun seeing action at the safety position, earning praise from head coach Dan Campbell for his performance during his first NFL start.
Mills, who joined the Lions via waivers in December 2024, recorded several defensive and special teams snaps during his recent elevations. His release follows the team's efforts to stabilize the secondary amidst injuries to players like Avonte Maddox and Thomas Harper.
